One word, four possible intentions

Adults use hookup for different levels of contact and commitment. It may describe a casual first date with no promised outcome, a one-off sexual encounter, repeat physical meetings without a committed partnership, or a low-pressure meeting where both people decide what they want later.

None of those meanings is automatic. Even when two profiles use the same word, the people behind them may picture different boundaries, communication and future contact.

Replace “What are you looking for?” with answerable questions

A broad question often receives a broad answer. Ask about the decision you actually need to make:

  • Did you have one meeting in mind, or would you be open to seeing the same person again?
  • Would you rather begin with coffee, a drink or another public plan?
  • Are you dating other people, and are you expecting exclusivity from me?
  • How much contact do you want before and after meeting?
  • What would make you stop or change the plan?

You do not need to negotiate an entire relationship in the first message. You do need enough information to know whether continuing the conversation makes sense.

Write the meaning into your profile

“Open to hookups” gives a label but no usable detail. Add whether you prefer spontaneous dates or advance plans, whether an ongoing FWB connection is possible, the broad London area you can reach and the times you are genuinely free. Keep your address, employer and exact routine private.

A clearer version might be: “Usually free in Central London on weeknights. Open to one casual date or something ongoing if communication stays straightforward.”

Agreeing to chat, meet, drink, kiss or go somewhere else does not imply agreement to another activity. Consent applies to the specific activity, requires freedom and capacity, and can be withdrawn. If the answer is unclear, pause and ask; silence, previous contact and a dating profile are not substitutes for agreement.

Before chat becomes a London meetup

Choose a staffed public venue, compare the complete journey and agree on a realistic duration. Tell someone you trust where you are going, keep control of your transport and avoid making the first meeting dependent on the last train or a lift from the other person.

See the LondonHookup safety page for fraud patterns, private-image risks and steps to take if someone applies pressure.

Repeat, redefine or stop—say which one

If you want to meet again, say what you enjoyed and suggest a next step. If your expectations changed, explain the change instead of quietly treating the first meeting as a new agreement. If you do not want more contact, a brief direct answer is enough; another person does not need to approve your decision.

Consent in England and Wales

The Crown Prosecution Service explains that consent requires choice, freedom and capacity, can be limited to a particular activity and can be withdrawn.

If the connection may continue

Compare casual dating in London with an ongoing friends-with-benefits connection. The labels overlap, but the expectations you need to discuss are not identical.

Use the smallest clear next step

A profile detail, one direct question and a public first plan are more useful than trying to settle everything with a label.
