Agreeing to meet, drink, kiss, go home with someone or having consented previously does not create consent to another activity. The Crown Prosecution Service explains that consent requires choice, freedom and capacity and can be withdrawn.

If a person is asleep, unconscious or lacks capacity because of alcohol or drugs, do not proceed. If words or behaviour are unclear, pause and check. Pressure, persistence and disappointment do not turn uncertainty into agreement.

Talk about sexual health before physical contact

Discuss barriers, contraception where relevant, recent testing and other partners. The NHS notes that many STIs can have no symptoms; confidential testing and treatment are available through sexual health services.

You can leave without winning an argument

You do not need the other person's permission or a perfectly worded explanation. Take your phone and belongings, move towards staff or other people and contact someone you trust. Call 999 if anyone is in immediate danger.

Keep the evidence; use the correct route

Preserve messages, usernames, payment details and dates when it is safe. Report the account through the service where the contact occurred. For suspected romance fraud, use the UK’s Report Fraud information and reporting route. Contact your bank immediately if money or account access is involved.
